As Olympic flame is lit, tragedy strikes Rio de Janeiro

When the Olympic flame was lit in Athens late last month, the home straight of Brazil's burdensome sporting project finally came into sight.

Years of Games-related delays, panic and criticism would soon be in the past if Rio de Janeiro could pull its act together for another 100 or so days.

But within hours, a moment of disaster took the spotlight off the ancient flame-lighting ceremony in Greece.
